What exactly does the turbogrün lawn aerator do?

The aim of the turbogrün lawn aerator is to break down existing thatch with the help of microorganisms. This increases activity in the soil, promotes microorganisms and makes organically bound nutrients available to the lawn again.

What is thatch?
Thatch is a felt-like layer made up of:

• grass clippings

• dead grass

• organic material

This layer sits between the turf and the soil. If left untreated, it can become several centimetres thick, and in extreme cases up to around 10 cm.

Why is thatch harmful to your lawn?
A thick layer of thatch acts like a barrier:

• water is held in the thatch and barely reaches the roots

• nutrients no longer reach the soil

• oxygen supply is severely restricted

The consequences are:

• weak, shallow root growth

• poorer nutrient uptake

• brown patches in the lawn

• increased susceptibility to fungal diseases

If oxygen deprivation is severe, the lawn can even "suffocate" and die back.

Typical signs of thatch are:

• the lawn feels soft and springy underfoot

• footprints remain visible

• water drains away only slowly

Why does removing thatch help?
Once the thatch is broken down,

• water, air and nutrients reach the roots more easily again

• soil life is stimulated

• the lawn can grow stronger and root more deeply

• fungal diseases find less favourable conditions

This is exactly where the lawn aerator comes in. Rather than removing thatch mechanically, it lets microorganisms in the soil break it down. The nutrients bound up in it become available to the lawn again.
