Complete Guide: How to Properly Resow a Lawn

Overseeding your lawn is the foundation for a lawn that remains thick, healthy, and beautiful over the long term. With the right preparation, the appropriate seed, and consistent care, you’re sure to succeed.

1. The Right Time

The best time to reseed is:

  • Spring or Fall

These seasons offer ideal conditions for germination and root development.

2. Soil Preparation (the most important step)

Replanting is especially advisable when the soil has been subjected to heavy use, such as from construction equipment.

Loosen the soil

  • Loosen the soil deeply or till it (a rotary tiller is recommended)

  • Depending on the soil type, work in sand or humus

  • At the same time:

    • turbogrün Water Manager

    • turbogrün Lawn Aerator
Get involved—it'll save you a lot of trouble later on

Grade the ground

  • Level the floor

  • Roll it out so the base settles

Recommendation:
Ideally, carry out this work in the fall and let the soil rest over the winter.

In the spring:

  • Weed Removal

  • Smooth out the surface again

3. Check the pH level (especially in the spring)

Before sowing, it is recommended to take a soil sample to determine the pH level.

  • If the soil is too acidic, it needs to be limed

  • A pH level that is too low can cause lawn seeds to be scorched and prevent them from germinating

👉 Important:
Wait 4 weeks after liming before sowing.

4. Basal Fertilization Before Planting

Before sowing, the following products are incorporated into the soil:

  • 10 g/m² TurboGreen Long-Lasting Lawn Fertilizer
    or

  • 50 g/m² TurboGreen Organic Lawn Fertilizer

  • plus 10 g/m² of Turbogrün lawn aerator

Pro Tip: Water Manager

  • 1 kg/m² Turbogrün Water Manager

  • Work it into the top 10 cm of soil

  • Smooth out the surface again and roll it out

  • Let the soil settle for a few days

The water manager acts as a natural water reservoir and prevents hydrophobia.

5. Sow grass seed

It's time to sow—choosing the right seed mix is crucial.

  • Spread the seeds evenly

  • Best used with a turbo spreader (settings 4–5)

Pro Tip: The Sandwich Method

  1. Lightly roughen the surface

  2. Sowing Grass Seed

  3. Spread approximately 0.5 cm of lawn soil evenly

  4. Roll out the dough

→ Ensures optimal ground contact and protects against bird damage

6. Watering After Sowing

Consistent moisture is crucial during the first 20 days:

  • Keep the soil moist at all times

  • Water briefly 4–5 times a day

  • Especially important during hot weather or when there is a lack of rain

  • Be sure to avoid letting it dry out

7. First Pruning & First Fertilization

  • First pruning when the plant reaches a height of 5–10 cm

  • Start by mowing only the tips (no more than ⅓ of the blade length)

  • After that:

    • Apply 20 g/m² of fertilizer

    • soak it thoroughly

Then gradually reduce the cutting height:

  • only after every 3rd or 4th mowing

  • Never cut more than ⅓ of the blade length

8. Care During the First Few Months

  • At first, weeds (e.g., lamb's quarters) may sprout along with the crops → no problem; they'll disappear on their own with proper care

  • Starting now:

    • Fertilize every 2 months

    • Mow 1–2 times a week

    • Always use sharp knives or a spindle
