Why Winter Fertilizer Makes Sense—Even If the Lawn Doesn't Seem to Be Growing

The question keeps coming up: Why should a winter fertilizer be used at all after fall fertilization? After all, the lawn barely grows in the winter—so why do it need additional nutrients?
This article explains why winter fertilizer is by no means unnecessary, how it works, and why it plays a crucial role in ensuring a healthy, thick lawn in the spring.


1. The lawn is alive—even in winter

A lawn is a perennial crop. Grasses do not completely cease their activity in winter. Whenever there is no frost, important processes continue—even if you can hardly see any growth above ground:

  • Root growth occurs especially at cool temperatures

  • Photosynthesis continues on mild days

  • Metabolism, glucose production, and energy expenditure remain active

All of these processes require nutrients.
The big problem in winter: Soil life is dormant. Microorganisms and bacteria are barely active, so there is no natural supply of nutrients from the soil.


2. Why fall fertilizer alone is not enough

Fall fertilizer, which is usually applied in October or November, prepares the lawn very well for winter. However, its effects are temporary:

  • Ammonium nitrogen is effective for only about 6–7 weeks

  • In December and January, the plant-available nutrients in the topsoil are usually depleted

  • Nutrients migrate into deeper soil layers (below 30 cm)—where grass roots can barely reach

The result:
The lawn is beginning to deplete its own reserves. However, these reserves are crucial for frost hardiness, health, and a strong start in the spring.


3. What a winter fertilizer does

A winter fertilizer is specially formulated for the period from November through February—even during cold nights or when there is snow.

A continuous, gentle supply of nutrients

The combination of nitrogen, potassium, and sulfur trioxide provides the lawn with the nutrients it needs without stimulating unnecessary growth.
The lawn stays well-maintained without becoming "soft."

Protection Against Diseases

Snow mold and other fungal diseases are particularly common in winter.
The iron content:

  • has a disease-preventing effect

  • reduces moss growth

  • promotes a stable, green color

Protection Against Frost Stress

Potassium helps with:

  • thicker cell walls

  • greater frost resistance

  • more resilient plant structures

Supporting Root Growth

Especially in winter, the root continues to grow as soon as the weather turns mild.
The nutrients are absorbed directly by young root hairs—exactly where they're needed.


4. No risk of unnecessary nutrient loss

Experiments conducted by the University of Hohenheim show:
Nutrient loss occurs only in cases of severe over-application—even on sandy soils.

Normal garden soils also serve as a storage medium.
A winter fertilizer applied in the proper amount is therefore utilized almost entirely.


5. Important Instructions for Use

  • Do not apply to frozen ground

  • Air temperature: at least 3–5 °C

  • Light rainfall after application is ideal for washing in the nutrients
