How do slime molds form?

Organic matter in the soil is usually broken down by a fungal network known as mycelium. When this fungal network appears on the surface, it takes the form of slime molds. These can develop throughout the year.

In the picture, you can see what slime molds looked like on our lawn. They can come in a wide variety of colors, ranging from yellow to orange to purple. The pustule-like fruiting bodies of the fungi settle on the blades of grass.

Generally speaking, slime molds do not damage the lawn and will disappear on their own as soon as the weather becomes a bit drier. Of course, they don’t look very nice. If you want to prevent them from appearing, you should keep the lawn as permeable to water and air as possible. You can achieve this through regular aeration and dethatching, by preventing thatch buildup, and by using turbogrün Lawn Aerator and regular fertilization.
