How do I water my lawn properly?
Proper watering is essential for a healthy, deeply rooted lawn. The rule of thumb is: it’s better to water infrequently but thoroughly than to water frequently with small amounts of water.
Unless there is sufficient rainfall, the lawn should be watered about once a week at a rate of 15–20 l/m². This allows the water to penetrate deep into the soil and promotes strong root growth. In hot, dry weather or when winds are drying out the soil, it may be a good idea to increase the watering frequency accordingly.
If it is very hot during the day, you can also give the lawn a quick watering at noon to cool it down. For this, 1–2 liters per square meter is enough to reduce heat stress—but this is no substitute for a thorough watering.
It's also important not to apply all the water at once. It's best to take breaks in between watering so that the water can penetrate the soil more effectively and doesn't run off the surface.
The best time to water is in the early morning. The soil is still cool then, evaporation is low, and the lawn dries out again as the day progresses. This significantly reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
