What is the best way to control common couch grass (Elymus repens) in a lawn?

Common couch grass is one of the most problematic weeds in lawns. It spreads primarily through underground stolons (rhizomes), making it particularly difficult to eradicate permanently.

Why Running Away Isn't Enough

When you pull out couch grass, root fragments almost always remain in the soil. These sprout again, so removing the grass by hand usually only provides short-term relief.

What Harms Couch Grass

– Very deep and frequent mowing
Couch grass is sensitive to low mowing heights at frequent intervals. Regular, low mowing weakens the plant and can significantly slow its spread.

– Mechanical removal for small areas
If only a small area is affected, you can dig up the entire area with a spade. It is important to thoroughly remove all remaining roots from the soil before reseeding.

Chemical Control – An Important Limitation

There is no selective herbicide that targets only couch grass. The only way to completely eliminate it is to use a non-selective herbicide.
