What should I keep in mind before, during, and after scarifying?

Proper dethatching helps remove thatch and moss and ensures a dense, healthy lawn. To help your lawn tolerate the process well and recover quickly, there are a few important things you should keep in mind before, during, and after dethatching.

Before Scarifying

  • Fertilize about 14 days in advance
Fertilizing beforehand gives the lawn enough strength to recover quickly after scarifying.

  • Choosing the Right Time
    We recommend scarifying only:

    • in the spring (May)

    • in the fall (September–October)

When scarifying

  • Mow the lawn short
Before scarifying, trim the lawn to a short cutting height.

  • Suitable weather conditions

    • not too hot

    • The lawn and soil should be mostly dry

  • Adjusting the Knife Properly
Depending on the thickness of the thatch, the blades should cut about 2–3 mm into the soil.

  • Drive Safely

    • Work in straight lines

    • Overlap the strips as little as possible

    • Avoid driving on curves

  • Scarify in a crisscross pattern
For even results, mow the lawn once lengthwise and once crosswise.

After scarifying

  • Sow seed to fill in gaps
Ideal for quickly filling any gaps that have formed.

  • Using a Lawn Aerator
The Turbogrün lawn aerator supports soil life and promotes rapid recovery.
