Should you use organic or mineral fertilizer?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, because both organic and inorganic fertilizers have their pros and cons. Which option is better depends on your goals, the condition of the soil, and your personal preferences. For many, it has almost become a matter of personal conviction: some prefer inorganic fertilizers, while others prefer organic ones.
Organic Fertilization
An organic lawn fertilizer does not act directly, but rather through soil life. Microorganisms break down the fertilizer and make the nutrients it contains available to the grass. How much of this actually reaches the plant depends on several factors:
Ground Temperature
Humidity
Oxygen supply
Activity of Soil Organisms
This makes it more difficult to calculate the exact nutrient requirements, and the effects usually don't become apparent until some time has passed.
Advantages:
very close to nature
promotes active soil life
Very little risk of overfertilization or “burns”
particularly well-suited for home and private gardens
Disadvantages:
The effect is delayed
Nutrient release cannot be precisely controlled
Mineral Fertilization
Mineral fertilizers are either manufactured or refined from natural raw materials (e.g., from mining). The nutrients they contain are immediately available to the lawn.
Advantages:
can be dispensed with great precision
Targeted application of individual nutrients is possible (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, lime)
Fast-acting; results are usually visible after 2–4 days
Disadvantages:
If the dosage is incorrect or too high, there is a risk of damage to the lawn (“burns”)
does not contribute to the promotion of soil life
