How do I remove dew from the lawn?
Removing dew from the lawn is also known as dew-wiping, dew-stripping, or dew-removal. The goal is to remove moisture from the blades of grass in the morning to prevent disease and improve lawn health.
Here's how to remove dew from the lawn
In the early morning hours, the dew is mechanically brushed off the blades of grass. Any tool that does not damage the lawn is suitable for this purpose:
– soft broom
– Lawn rake
– upside-down lawn rake
– Garden hose (gently run it over the lawn)
– Wooden slat, beam, or ladder
To do this, carefully guide the tool across the lawn so that the dew falls from the leaves onto the ground.
Alternatively, you can easily mow with a cylinder mower in the early morning hours.
→ The dew is removed at the same time.
Removing Dew with the Sprinkler System
If you have a sprinkler system, you can turn it on briefly in the morning. The effect is similar to wiping off dew: the blades of grass are “rinsed off” and then dry more quickly.
Note: This does not remove existing fungal mycelium, but it does reduce the risk of disease.
Benefits of De-icing
Regularly removing dew has several benefits for the lawn:
– reduced risk of disease, since wet leaves provide ideal conditions for fungal diseases
– The condensation does not evaporate but seeps into the soil and is available to the roots (up to about 1 l/m²)
– Dry grasses are more active in photosynthesis
– The lawn is much easier to mow when the grass is dry
