How do red threads (“red tips”) form, and what can be done about them?

From a distance, the affected areas of the lawn usually look like brown or straw-colored patches. Upon closer inspection, however, you can see fine, reddish threads on the blades of grass—this typical appearance is known as Sharpness is referred to as.

Cause of the Red Tip

The cause is the weak fungus Laetisaria fuciformis. It occurs most often when:

– the lawn is not receiving enough nutrients
– Nitrogen deficiency
– that thatch has formed on the lawn
– the lawn is generally weakened

The fungus usually infects otherwise dense lawns and often uses the existing thatch as an intermediate host.

Here's How to Deal with Cheekiness

The good news is that leaf spot can be treated very effectively without using chemical fungicides.

– Apply Turbogrün Long-Lasting Lawn Fertilizer / Spring Lawn Fertilizer to the lawn
– Application rate: 20 g/m²
– After fertilizing, the lawn continues to grow vigorously
– The red fungal threads grow out and are removed during the next mowing

Preventive Measures

To prevent another infestation, we recommend:

– Fertilize regularly, about every 8 weeks
– Removing thatch from your lawn with the Turbogrün lawn aerator
– Improved soil activity and aeration

The lawn aerator breaks down lawn thatch naturally and, over the long term, deprives the fungus of its source of nourishment. Thatch decomposition is a biological process and takes some time.
