Mowing the lawn correctly: optimum cutting height, frequency and implementation

A beautiful lawn requires more than just occasional mowing - the right cutting height, the frequency of mowing and whether a grass catcher is used are crucial. Here you will find all the important tips explained in an easy-to-understand way.

  1. The correct cutting height (depending on the type of grass)
The right cutting height is crucial for a healthy lawn. Less than 2 cm requires a lot of maintenance and is usually only suitable for ornamental lawns. 2-3 cm looks neat but is still high maintenance. A height of 3-5 cm is recommended for most gardens, as it offers a good compromise between appearance and effort. A lawn with a cutting height of over 5 cm is low-maintenance.
Note the1/3 ruleNever cut more than a third of the grass height at a time. This keeps the lawn resilient and healthy.

  2. How often should I mow?
During the growth phase in spring and summer, the lawn should be3-4 times per weekmowed when the grass is growing quickly. It is important to alwaysSharp knivesas these ensure a clean cut - even in damp soil or light rain. In fall and winter, less frequent mowing is sufficient, and mowing should only be done when the lawn is visibly growing.

  3. Mowing with or without a grass catcher?
If the soil is active and the clippings decompose quickly, you can mulch without hesitation. TheMulchingprovides the lawn with additional nutrients. However, if the soil life is less active, it is better to collect the clippings so that they do not remain lying around and pollute the lawn. For a particularly clean surface, it is also advisable to mow with a grass catcher, as this prevents clippings from getting stuck on the lawn or on your shoes. You should also always mow with a grass catcher when weeds or diseases are present to prevent seeds or pathogens from being dispersed and spread.

  4. Special tips for reseeding and reseeding
If you are sowing new grass or reseeding areas, you should proceed with particular care. Wait until the blades have grown 8-10 cm high before making the first cut. Then carefully shorten them to at least 5 cm so as not to damage the young blades of grass. Only when the lawn becomes denser can you slowly reduce the cutting height to maintain it evenly.

  5. Seasonal peculiarities when mowing the lawn
Derfirst cut in springas soon as the lawn is visibly growing again. This is a clear signal that the maintenance season has begun. Thelast cut in the fallshould take place when growth comes to a standstill. This is the best way to prepare the lawn for the cold season. Lawn mowing is also possible in winter: whenmild temperaturesundvisible growthcan be mowed occasionally, but you should be particularly careful not to damage the turf.
