Instructions: Lawn renewal without tilling

Every now and then the lawn should be renewed or renovated. This is the case when

  1. the lawn looks patchy (less lawn - more meadow)

  2. the lawn is interspersed with lots of weeds/moss

  3. you want a carpet with a lush green lawn

  4. a revitalization is pending.

Renewing a lawn costs significantly less than laying a new one, e.g. with a turf roll, which can easily cost well over 10 euros/m².

In recent years, we have renovated dozens of lawns, including areas that were already 10-15 years old.

Lawn renewal: step by step

  1. It is advisable to check the pH value of the soil approx. 3 weeks before renewing the lawn

    • The best way to find out whether the soil is too acidic is to take a soil sample. We have hired a professional laboratory that does a very good job. In addition to the result of the professional soil analysis, you will also receive a fertilization plan from us so that you fertilize exactly what your lawn or soil needs and the lawn becomes nice and dense. This will make it more difficult for moss and weeds to establish themselves in your lawn in the future. Moss is often an indicator of acidic soil. Therefore, the acidity of the soil should be neutralized with lime over a period of 2 years with three applications per year

  2. First, the weeds are removed from the lawn

    • If the entire area is infested with weeds, the entire area is treated with weed remover; if weeds are only present in spots or on partial areas, treatment of these partial areas is sufficient.

    • Once the weeds have died down, the lawn is mowed relatively short (the shorter the better) - the clippings should never be left on the lawn.

    • Dead material, moss, thatch and dead weeds are removed from the lawn.

    • The lawn is aerated lengthwise and crosswise / possibly scarified. Our experience shows that scarifying is much more effective here and also scratches the ground nicely.

    • The scarifier should be set so that the blades cut approx. 2-3 mm into the ground

    • After that, the lawn usually looks pretty bare.

  3. Now we come to turf renewal / turf renovation

    • The lawn seeds are distributed evenly and scattered in a criss-cross pattern over the surface. The boxes have an ideal opening that enables even distribution. Alternatively, you can also spread the seeds with the Granomax or a box spreader.

    • This is followed by an approx. 5 mm thin layer of turf soil (lawn substrate or sand substrate)

    • The seed should be in contact with the soil

    • We also recommend applying our organic fertilizer at the same time. This acts as a kind of starter fertilizer. 30-50 g/sqm of fertilizer is usually sufficient.

    • The surface must now be kept moist for the first 14-20 days and watered briefly 4-5 times a day

  4. More tips for a perfect new lawn:

    • After scarifying, but before sowing, you can apply our water manager. This creates a permanent water reservoir in the soil. The water manager absorbs water quickly and then releases it slowly and in doses.

    • If you also apply the lawn aerator, you can ensure that the microorganisms ensure balanced soil activity. This creates extreme vitality in the new, young lawn.

  5. The first lawn cut:

    • When the lawn has grown approx. 5 - 10 cm, the tips should be mowed off. Then mow at least 1 - 2 times a week

    • Please only ever mow a maximum of ⅓ of the length of the blade of grass and slowly adjust the cutting height to the desired height.

    • After the first mowing, fertilize regularly every 8 weeks with our slow-release fertilizer.

    • If the soil is acidic, it must be limed two to three times a year.

    • The best way to find out whether the soil is too acidic is to use ourSoil analysisout. In addition to the soil sample, you will also receive a fertilization plan from us, so you fertilize exactly what your lawn/soil needs, the lawn becomes nice and dense, this makes it harder for moss and weeds to settle in your lawn in the future.
