Clover growth is a phenomenon that we do not like to see in the lawn;
The following clover species are not our friends:
White clover (very persistent)
Red clover
Hop clover
Minikleesorten
Wood sorrel
How does the clover get into the lawn?
Clover is added to some lawn seed mixtures as it has a positive effect. Clover is a legume that is a natural nitrogen collector. The nodules in the root area also provide nitrogen to the lawn roots. If the lawn is not cared for properly, clover growth is encouraged, and clover often survives dry periods magnificently.
One of the resulting problems is that clover flowers attract bees and bumblebees in late summer, which repeatedly leads to serious sting injuries. Very different, with sometimes severe allergic reactions. The lawn lover does not want a clover lawn, he simply wants a lawn without weeds.
What can be done about it?
If medium to heavy clover growth is already present, our experience has shown that only Weed killer. As clover has few leaf surfaces but a lot of roots, the first treatment usually only decimates about 50-60% of the weeds. A second treatment with the weed killer may sometimes be necessary. We explain the best way to apply the weed killer in the here.
In warm and dry weather, the effect can be seen within a few days, the leaves twist.
If the clover has died back, it should either be scarified or aerated. The resulting gaps in the lawn should be closed with reseeding.
To prevent clover growth, fertilize regularly with a nitrogenous fertilizer (Turbogreen slow-release fertilizer). So that you always have fertilizer in stock, we recommend our Fertilizer subscription. If you then mow and reseed regularly, the lawn will be dense and the clover will have an extremely hard time.
