Root rot (Pythium rot)

The root rot initially looks like dry damage, slightly bluish. However, one thing can be said with certainty: Pythium is a typical stress disease which only attacks weakened lawn grasses. If the weather conditions are also conducive to infestation, the disease can quickly spread across large areas of the lawn.

Infestation-promoting factors are

  • High daytime temperatures of over 30° combined with high humidity; night-time temperatures of over 20°

  • High floor temperatures

  • Soil compaction

  • Too much nitrogen

  • pH value too high

  • Waterlogged soil (waterlogging, dew, shady locations, lack of air circulation, no wind)

To prevent root rot, you can optimize your watering technique. It is better to water in the morning hours rather than in the evening. Eliminate soil compaction, e.g. by deep loosening. Balanced and even nutrient supply. The requirement can be determined, for example, by taking a soil sample. Reduce thatch by scarifying, aerating or using our lawn aerator. Regularly check the pH value.
